It takes 28 gallons of water, dozens of portions of vegetables and fruit, and hundreds of ounces of grain and protein to sustain a family of four for one week.

Albertsons has a visual display showing the exact amounts of food and water that are necessary for survival over seven days. The purpose is to demonstrate what a family would need during an emergency such as an impassable bridge after an earthquake or a power outage.

A City of Mercer Island Family Emergency Preparedness Plan booklet is available at the display, along with a list of recommended items to stock up.

The display, up through July 15 in the southeast section of the store, is sponsored by the City of Mercer Island and Albertsons.

Albertsons Store Director Dan Eichner and Sue Robboy, emergency preparedness volunteer, helped to create the display.
