Westbound I-90 to close this weekend

Published 11:00 am Thursday, October 8, 2015

The I-90 detours are back after a summer hiatus. Lanes will close 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, and open at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 as WSDOT funnels westbound traffic from Bellevue to the center lanes for construction purposes.

To reduce the impacts of the closures on residents, WSDOT will try out a new option: using the Island Crest Way exit in addition to East Mercer Way. All westbound drivers wishing to exit onto Mercer Island must still use East Mercer Way, but will have the option to continue through the interchange back onto the right lane of I-90, in order to exit at ICW.

  • Those traveling from Mercer Island to Seattle should enter the express lanes at 77th Avenue S.E. or Island Crest Way.
  • Westbound I-90 drivers will be unable to exit to Rainier Avenue South and should follow the signed detour using Fourth Avenue South and eastbound I-90.
  • Drivers transporting flammable materials westbound across Lake Washington must use alternate routes such as Interstate 405, State Route 520 or State Route 522.
  • The I-90 Trail will not be impacted during the closure.

There are 24 more weekend directional closures of I-90 planned between now and mid-2017 while the state builds all-day bus and carpool lanes next to the regular lanes. This work will allow the center I-90 roadway to be dedicated to Sound Transit light rail construction in 2017.
