What is the mission of your organization? The Mercer Island Women’s Club is a social and philanthropic organization that welcomes all women who are current residents of Mercer Island. Whether you are new to Mercer Island or a long-time resident, we invite you to participate. We are a club of women who are diverse in every way yet find common interests and bonds with lasting friendships. MIWC is a self-supporting nonprofit 501(c)7 organization with an elected volunteer leadership team to implement our purpose, which is to encourage friendship among the women of Mercer Island by providing a varied program of activities with a special emphasis on our Island newcomers.

How many people does your organization help? Over 300 enthusiastic women of all ages (21 to infinity), enjoy a variety of activities tailored to the interests of the current membership. Whether you are single or married, work full time, are retired or are a stay at home mom, there are activities for you. We run both day and evening time activities to work around most schedules. We also welcome ideas for new activities. Our Luncheons feature guest speakers on various topics. MIWC Evening Socials with Live entertainment are the talk of the island.

What is your greatest need? Our greatest need is to reach more women on Mercer Island with our offer of friendship and to raise the profile of our philanthropic work. Civic Projects is the fundraising and community charitable outreach arm of the club. We have two main fundraising events per year: The Festive Luncheon and Holiday Bazaar in early December at the beautiful Glendale Country Club. This luncheon is open to members and their non-member guests. It’s a wonderful way to get some early holiday shopping done in relaxed environment instead of dealing with crowds at the mall.This is followed by our special Community Luncheon in early spring, featuring popular professional speakers and it is open to the public. The proceeds of these events go to the club’s Civic Projects fund, which is distributed in the spring to local nonprofit organizations voted upon by club members. Over the last five years, we have provided funding to the following local organizations: DAWN, Eastside Domestic Violence, Harrington House, Mary’s Place, Washington Women in Need, Mercer Island Youth and Family Services, Mercer Island Farmers’ Market, Mercer Island Music in the Park and Mercer Island Parks and Recreation.

How can the community help your organization? Helping us through its communication channels, helping us promote our offer of friendship to extend it to all women on the Island. Membership is only $30 per year.

Prospective new members: If you are considering joining us please meet us for coffee at South End Starbucks the first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. You are welcome to bring your children with you. The coffee is on us!

MIWC FAQ:

Q: I thought MIWC is for retired ladies, will I feel out of place as a younger mother?

A: No MIWC is for all ladies over 21 years of age. Q: Why join MIWC if I already attend a Mother and Toddler Group, I can make friends there?

A: You can be a member of both clubs, extending your circle of friends. MIWC is about taking a break and doing something fun that is just for yourself, all Moms need a much deserved break. Why not try some evening activities and see what you think?

Q: I am part of the LGBTQ community, will I be able to join MIWC?

A: MIWC is an open affirming organization. You will be welcomed with open arms like all our ladies.

Q: I am concerned about arguments about religion and politics, this puts me off joining community organizations. How does MIWC deal with such disagreements?

A: At MIWC our Bylaws prohibit the discussion of religion and politics at club activities/events. Our focus is on fun and friendship.

Q: I volunteer on a school PTA board, I would love to be on the MIWC Board too, is this possible?

A: Absolutely, we appreciate volunteers and often have open chairs, ask us for more information. We look forward to welcoming you.
