Jane Meyer Brahm, longtime resident and community volunteer, is running for re-election to Position 1 on the Mercer Island City Council. She was elected to the position in 2011 after being appointed to fill the seat vacated by Steve Litzow. Heading Brahm’s re-election team is her campaign manager, former Mercer Island Mayor Alan Merkle.
“I consider it a great honor to serve on the council of such a wonderful community as Mercer Island,” she said. “I have enjoyed serving the community for nearly five years and hope to continue to help our city meet the challenges of the future.”
Among the many issues the city is facing, Brahm cites transportation as a paramount challenge.
“For an island community in the middle of two major metropolitan centers, transportation has been and always will be a major issue,” she said. “Decades ago, I-90 was the challenge; today it’s the interconnected issues of Sound Transit, commuter parking, possible bus intercept, mitigation for the loss of the I-90 center roadway, and how they all relate to Town Center development.”
As a member of the council’s Town Center subcommittee and the Town Center Liaison Group, Brahm has been working to ensure that the Town Center process works and that the views of Stakeholder Committee and Island citizens are heard and reflected in any upcoming zoning code changes.
She has served on the Sustainability Committee and the Open Space Conservancy Trust Board; she is currently on the City School District Ad Hoc Committee and the Parks and Recreation Committee. She has been council liaison to the Arts Council since 2011. She also serves on several regional boards.
Brahm has lived on the Island since 1976, and her daughters went through Mercer Island schools. She was editor of the Mercer Island Reporter for 11 years until she retired in 2004. She is the author of the book, “Mercer Island History: From Haunted to Coveted Community,” published in 2014 by the Mercer Island Historical Society.
A longtime community volunteer, she was active in the PTA while her daughters were in school, and was a board member of the Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club for 10 years.
She is a founder and current board member of the Mercer Island Sister City Association, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this summer.
She is a longtime board member of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, and is the current secretary. She was presented with the City of Mercer Island’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010.
