MIHS boys notch 3A KingCo cross country championship

Mercer Island High School’s Ryan Koopman raced to first overall and the Islanders boys varsity won the 3A KingCo cross country team title on Oct. 23 at Lake Sammamish State Park.

In the 5,000-meter race, Koopman led the pack with a time of 16:27.61. In the final team standings, MI tallied 35 points to take the crown. The team also consisted of Owen Powell, Brooks Enge, Clark Koopman, Alex Levin, Luke Sandmaier and Kai Zettel.

On the MI girls’ side, Sophia Fan placed fifth in 19:53.01 and the girls took third overall.

At the Sea-King District 2 Championships on Oct. 30 at Lake Sammamish State Park, the boys took third and advance to state as a team for the first time since 2014. Ryan Koopman was the Islanders’ highest placer in eighth (16:13.81).

Fan and Karen Zhang also qualify for state, which will take place on Nov. 6 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
