Two St. Monica School students competed at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic championships July 6 at Central Valley High School in Spokane Valley.

Fifth-grader Makena Wick and eighth-grader Landon Armstrong both earned status as Junior Olympic qualifiers for the Pacific Northwest region. Only the top five athletes in each event earn National Junior Olympic Qualifier status, with some events having as many as 40 competitors.

Wick medaled in the 400-meter race with a personal record of 1:04 and also medaled in the 4×400 relay, recording the fastest time on her relay team. Wick is ranked in the USATF’s top 50 athletes in her age division.

Armstrong medaled in all three of his individual events, which included the 100-meter race, the 200-meter race and javelin. He set a personal record in the 100 meters at 12.08. Armstrong is also ranked in USATF’s top 50 athletes in his age division. As a javelin thrower, he is currently ranked 6th in the nation for his age group.
