City rolls out residential street repaving and resurfacing program

From now until the end of October, city of Mercer Island contractor Lakeside Industries will be engaged in the city’s annual residential street repaving and resurfacing program.

The two-pronged project — with an estimated budget of $750,000 — commenced during the week of July 27 and will focus on repairing roadways with low pavement condition ratings. Featuring the CM Design Group, the planning/design phase began in December of 2025 and wrapped up in May of 2026.

Schedule A’s work will include full pavement reconstruction, asphalt repaving, storm drainage repairs, utility adjustments and shoulder restoration and take place on Southeast 80th Street, Southeast 82nd Street, 78th Avenue Southeast (south of Southeast 76th Street) and 93rd Avenue Southeast (south of Southeast 70th Place).

Schedule B’s work will include asphalt grind and overlay to smooth the intersection profile, followed by utility cover adjustments and fresh pavement markings, and will occur at the intersection of 80th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 28th Street.

First up during the week of July 27 will be pavement removal and surface preparation on Southeast 80th Street and Southeast 82nd Street.

Asphalt paving is scheduled (weather permitting) for the week of Aug. 3 on Southeast 80th Street and Southeast 82nd Street.

Next up on the docket will be pavement restoration on 93rd Avenue Southeast and 78th Avenue Southeast, followed by Town Center intersection work.

According to the city, residents should “expect minor traffic delays, localized lane closures and machinery in active work zones. Follow all posted detour signs, drive slowly around crews, and budget extra travel time when driving through these neighborhoods. Thank you for your patience as we work to keep Mercer Island’s infrastructure smooth and safe.”
