Opening day, baseball provides memories

My first baseball game that I attended with my dad, who is not a sports guy, was to see Ken Griffey Jr. during his rookie season. The event was special for me, since it took me three seasons to finally get him to take me to a game. During batting practice, my dad whipped out a pen and told me to go and try to get Griffey’s autograph. I thought he was crazy. I went with some trepidation because I knew the chances were slim. I also figured I knew more than my dad, since I had all the Mariners’ names memorized and he didn’t know who was the starting pitcher. But I got his signature and it is one of my best memories as a kid. Not that it was Griffey’s autograph, but that my dad and I had a baseball memory to keep between us.

The Shields brothers are making a big difference for Mercer Island High School boys lacrosse. A pass by freshman Matt Shields to his brother, Daniel, during the second overtime of the Mercer Island boys lacrosse game against Bainbridge Island resulted in the biggest goal of the season. The rocket shot by Daniel found the back of the Spartan goal to lift the home team to a 7-6 victory on Saturday at Islander Stadium.

Gavin Cree has more experience than most with the Mercer Island High School basketball program. He also knows how revered his former mentor Ed Pepple is and what the expectations are for the program. He will now get his chance step onto the MIHS basketball sideline as head coach. Mercer Island High School assistant principal Craig Olson announced the decision to hire Cree Monday afternoon.

Going into this year’s girls tennis season, there was some question as to whether Islander sophomore Chelsea Bailey was ready to play singles during postseason play.
