Writers from as far away as Portland congregated at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center for a publishing salon on Sunday afternoon. Some were published authors, but most had works in progress: a memoir of growing up on a farm in Enumclaw, an illustrated children’s book, a biography set in Africa.
Polly Lindberg was going with someone else at the time when she met the man she would marry. John Lindberg, a doctor, was in town from Chicago for his colleague’s wedding to Polly’s sister in Des Moines, Iowa.
“That’s when Polly became a person of interest to me,” said John.
You’ve probably seen him at Noah’s Bagels, working behind the counter during the lunch rush. Dave Rosen is a veteran who went to Somalia with the Marines during the humanitarian aid mission that led to the Black Hawk Down conflict in Mogadishu. A Mercer Island High School graduate, Rosen enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 24. He initially intended to get aircraft mechanic certification, but then the Gulf War started, and he became a data systems maintenance technician who attained the rank of sergeant. After six years of military service, he became a sheriff’s deputy in California. He returned to Mercer Island three and a half years ago.
Sarah Sorte returned to the Stroum Jewish Community Center three years ago, where she had worked as a receptionist for six years. She is now the concierge services manager and commutes from the Issaquah Highlands. Her sister, Beth Rosen, also works at the SJCC, and her children, she said “grew up here.” Her teenage son is a scorekeeper at the SJCC, where her daughter has also worked in the reception area.

When Mindy Stern and her husband returned home from a weekend trip and found a wet envelope on their doorstep, they knew who had left it there: their cat, Nile.
Nile may bring home an occasional mouse or two, as any typical outdoor cat would do, but his most frequent offerings are paper items and litter: a library overdue notice, a business advertisement, a University of Washington parking stub.
The U.S. Marshals Service and Mercer Island Fire Department presented awards during the Oct. 4 City Council meeting to two individuals who helped save the life of Mercer Island resident Jack Williams.
After Williams, an assistant chief deputy U.S. marshal, collapsed from a major heart arrhythmia at Islander Middle School last June, bystanders Erin White and Eric Weber began prompt CPR.
Who she is: Margaret Martin, Mercer Island Library children’s librarian.
What she does: I work with all ages, helping with various reference questions at the desk, and help people find information. The biggest responsibilities are helping find that right book for a child. Reader’s Advisory is a big part of what I do. Another part is helping kids 0-5 with early learning through our story times.
