Mercer Island High School’s girls track and field squad placed first in the team standings at the South Sound Classic at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on May 2. The class 3A Islanders netted 82.5 points to beat out second-place class 4A Curtis (76). The local girls’ 4x100-meter relay team (pictured) of Lauren Balousek, Hanna Lassila, Aaliyah Khan and Eloise Newman broke both the school and meet records with a time of 48.12. Balousek set a new meet record in the 400-meter run with a time of 56.02. Khan earned athlete of the meet honors by contributing to the relay, taking first in the triple jump (39-6.5) and finishing second in the long jump (18-2.25). Courtesy photo
