A thousand strings

Almost a thousand harp strings will be plucked in unison on Friday, April 6, when an ensemble of 20 youth harpists presents “From Bach to Rock,” a benefit concert for YouthCare in Seattle. Mercer Island student Masami Cookson (third row, far right) will be in the middle of the action playing a range of music, from classical to Celtic, on her lever harp. Masami, a sixth grader at Islander Middle School, has played the harp for about four years. Harpists performing on the concert range in age from 8 to 18 and come from all parts of Seattle, as well as Olympia, Monroe, Vashon Island, Bellevue, Des Moines and Kent.
The spring ensemble concert will raise money for charity for YouthCare, a community agency helping homeless and at-risk youth in greater Seattle. Because the harp families all chipped in to rent the 285-seat Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center, all ticket donations will go directly to YouthCare. The benefit will also feature choreography by guest artists from Kaleidoscope Dance Company .
