The Lakes neighborhood will once again organize its annual Halloween trick-or-treat on Oct. 31, and keeping with previous years will hold a food drive for Mercer Island Food Pantry. The charitable Halloween tradition began in 1998, when resident Polly Addison set collections boxes at each Lakes entryway, asking visitors to donate non-perishable foods. Since then, the food-drive has become part of the overall Lakes Halloween festivity.
The neighborhood closes its streets to traffic, providing a safe place for children and parents alike to wander door-to-door. Households compete for the most theatrical costumes and yard decorations, many of which put the Adams Family and their spooky mansion to shame. The neighborhood is overrun with trick-or-treaters, as parents from across the Island drop their children off for the event. There are 100 homes to visit before curfew — adding up to weeks’ worth of candy.
But don’t forget the needy with all the candy-greedy! Four collection boxes will be waiting this year at each Lakes entrance: Two at the main entrance, one at the path from Lakeridge Elementary and one at the walking path on the west side. Any contribution will be greatly appreciated.
