The Mercer Island Visual Arts League will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this week.
It’s July on Mercer Island, and am I ever going to get to wear a swimsuit without a fleece cover up? Most of us who are not from the Pacific Northwest do not understand that summer does not start here until after Summer Celebration weekend.
A Music Nature Camp for kids called Island Beat will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church between July 11 and 15 and is for ages 11 to 14. The camp will include award-winning musician Joe Craven and a facilitator from the Wilderness Awareness School based in Duvall, Wash. For more, go to www.islandbeatmnc.org.
I’ve never been a goal-obsessed person. Seemingly, I’m just not wired that way. As a kid, trophies would go in the closet, and paper awards were stuck in a book somewhere.
Many Islanders snowbird to warmer states during the colder, wetter Washington winter months. I kept hearing about Arizona wines from many of these snowbirds. When I planned a trip to the Grand Canyon, using Sedona as a base camp, researching the emerging Arizona wine industry was high on my list of things to do.

Last weekend was all about celebrating mothers. Those who gave us birth and nurtured us with love. In my case it also included Mother Nature, whose natural beauty and organic goodness sustains our lives.
This year’s Mother’s Day has me dancing with joy. It is the first time that I will get to be with my mother on Mother’s Day in almost 20 years. My mother lives in Florida and I live on Mercer Island. So, I will not be taking this Mother’s Day for granted.
Islander and epidemiologist, Dr. Andrea LaCroix is again at the center of the decades-long discussion about the efficacy and risks of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women. The results of the recent phase of the studies she has lead indicates some significant benefits for women who took estrogen alone beginning in their 50s after hysterectomies.
Although most of my peers learned to type in high school, I took a typing course in eighth grade. One of our neighbors was a typing instructor at the local community college. He bent the rules so I could audit an evening class. As a result I learned to bend my fingers at just the right angle and at just the right position on the keyboard. It was Mr. Hill who introduced me to the “home row.”
A meaningful project is underway at the Stroum Jewish Community Center. Right now it looks a lot like mud, but next month planting will begin in what will be called the SJCC Kesher (which means “connection” in Hebrew) Community Garden.
