Youth Theatre Northwest presents ‘The Hundred Dresses’

Youth Theater Northwest (YTN) closes another successful school season with a moving tale about immigration, bullying and the innate desire within children to do the right thing. Based on the celebrated book by Eleanor Estes (Newberry Honor, 1945) and adapted by Mary Hall Surface, “The Hundred Dresses” performs May 5-21.

Performances will be held in the Parish Hall Theatre, located on the campus of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 4400 86th Ave. SE on Mercer Island. The show is directed by Kathryn Stewart.

For over 30 years, Youth Theatre Northwest has served youth from the Puget Sound region with high-quality arts education. YTN produces dynamic theatre for thousands of families, introducing young audiences to the magic of the performing arts while inspiring young actors with the thrill of live performance.

“The Hundred Dresses,” best for ages 8 and up, tells the story of Maggie, who goes along with whatever her best friend Peggy does. Then, Peggy starts teasing a new and different classmate. Wanda and her family have recently arrived in America to start a new life. After leaving everything behind in Poland, all Wanda has left is a funny last name and one faded blue dress she wears every day.

When Wanda claims to have a hundred dresses, her classmates think that’s an outrageous lie and demand she describe every single one in detail. Maddie doesn’t agree with the bullying but lacks the courage to speak up for fear of getting teased herself. Will Wanda find a friend in America and will her classmates find the courage to stand up to one another?

Ticket prices are $15-$17, and may be purchased in advance at www.YouthTheatre.org or at the performance.

The cast of “The Hundred Dresses” features some of Youth Theatre’s brightest talent. The cast of 25 actors (ages 8-16) are from Mercer Island, Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah and Newcastle.

YTN launches its Summerstock Season with “Music Man Jr.” performing July 14-30. For a full season line-up, visit YouthTheatre.org.
