According to the AAA holiday forecast, the company projects 43.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend, up from 43.3 million last year.

It’s the fourth consecutive increase in holiday travelers since 2008 when travel fell by 25 percent.

Approximately 90 percent of travels will go by car, up by .6 percent from 2011. Travelers going by plane are expected to decline to 3.14 million from 3.2 million in 2011.

The average distance traveled, according to AAA, drops to 588 miles from 706 miles.

Wednesday, Nov. 21 is expected to be the busiest travel day, with 45 percent of travelers surveyed planning on leaving Wednesday and returning Sunday.
