Anniversary | Phipps

Don and Joanne Phipps, of Mercer Island, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends at an Ivar’s Salmon House brunch. The couple was married on Sept. 1, 1949, in Kokomo, Ind. Mrs. Phipps retired from teaching in the Mercer Island School District in 1991 and was a member of the Association of Outdoor Education. She is currently active in the Bookbinders Book Club of retired teachers and also belongs to Pi Lambola Theta International Honor Society.

Mrs. Phipps retired from teaching in the Mercer Island School District in 1991 and was a member of the Association of Outdoor Education. She is currently active in the Bookbinders Book Club of retired teachers and also belongs to Pi Lambola Theta International Honor Society.

Mr. Phipps also retired in 1991 from the U.S. Department of Commerce. He is a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association and is also a regular donor at the Puget Sound Blood Center.

The couple has six children: Elaine Mahony (Jerry), of Bainbridge Island; Michael Phipps (Peggy), of Menlo Park, Calif.; Thomas Phipps (Beth), of Poulsbo, Wash.; Teresa Campbell (Howard), of San Jose, Calif.; Jessica Phipps (Sylvia), of Tukwila, Wash.; and Maureen Guenther (Brian), of Covington, Wash. The couple has nine grandchildren; Daniel, Gabriel, Sarah, Patrick, Maggie, Nicole, Sam, Natalia and Thomas; and three great-grandchildren, Katherine, Ashlyn and Jake.
