Kyra’s Hope Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing hope and joy to children and their families undergoing childhood cancer, will hold an Art for Hope event from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 20 at the Mercer Island Library.
The foundation was created in honor of Kyra Gupta, 12, who was a hi-cap student at Islander Middle School and Lakeridge Elementary School.
“A little over a month ago, our dear friends Alka and Gautam Kumar lost their lovely daughter Kyra. This bright, imaginative, endlessly loving 12-year-old battled a rare type of pediatric cancer with extraordinary courage for more than three years before becoming an angel,” the foundation said. “This foundation is our way of carrying her light forward — bringing comfort, creating joy, and standing beside families walking a path no child or parent should ever have to walk.”
During the event, children will create holiday ornaments and courage cards for children undergoing treatment, while strengthening their compassion muscles, according to the foundation.
The four pillars that guide the foundation’s mission are: COMFORT for children enduring treatment; JOY to uplift kids and their siblings; HOPE for families navigating unimaginable challenges; and RESEARCH FUNDING to fuel progress in pediatric cancer, where only 4% of federal funding reaches our children.
