City briefs: Public meeting set for Parks, Recreation and Open Space plan topics

The city wants to hear about residents’ ideas on a range of parks topics, including waterfront parks, trails and balancing park uses. Visit the Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) website at https://tinyurl.com/jat4h6ca to learn more or register for the virtual public meeting from 5:30-7:30 pm March 23 on Zoom.

The meeting will include a number of ways to provide input, including live polling and breakout rooms. Residents can send any questions to PROS@mercerisland.gov.

City to host Spring Recycling Event on March 27

The city’s annual Spring Recycling Event will occur from 9 am to 3 pm on March 27. After receiving three times the normal number of vehicles and more than double the usual tonnage at its fall 2020 event, organizers have moved back to the Boat Launch (3600 E. Mercer Way) for more space.

All residents are invited to safely dispose of old equipment, electronics, appliances and other household items. For public health and safety, new COVID-19 protocols will be in effect. People must wear masks and gloves, and pack their items so they can be removed quickly.

Paper shredding will be held onsite, and discounted rain barrels and compost bins will be available for purchase. This is a cash-only event. For full details on disposable items, visit https://www.mercerisland.gov/publicworks/page/spring-recycling-event. Donations in the form of grocery gift cards for the city’s food pantry will be accepted.

MIPD seeks community members for Investigative Review Board

The city is seeking at least two non-law enforcement community representatives to serve on an investigative board tasked with reviewing instances of police use-of-force on Mercer Island and the jurisdictions of partner agencies.

The goal is to enhance accountability and increase transparency and trust between law enforcement and the community. For more information, or to apply by April 2, residents can visit https://tinyurl.com/ccb2tntf.
