City Briefs: YFS, Hopelink help Islanders facing food insecurity

The Mercer Island Youth and Family Services Department is piloting a new program with Hopelink to bring its Mobile Market truck to the Island’s community and event center parking lot from 1-4 p.m. on Feb. 7 and 21 and March 6. The free market will provide fresh and shelf-stable goods and is available to any Islanders facing food insecurity. The center is located at 8236 SE 24th St.

In other city news, traffic counters — black wires on the roads or specialized cameras used to evaluate streets for safety and traffic flow — are being temporarily installed across four locations on Mercer Island: West Mercer Way and 84th Avenue Southeast, North Mercer Way and Roanoke Way, Southeast 61st Avenue east of Island Crest Way, and Southeast 40th Street west of 78th Avenue Southeast.

Also, workers are placing new signage across Town Center to make it easier for drivers to find parking. Ten signs will be installed on existing streetlights and new metal posts along 76th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 27th Street.
