Detours posted for I-5 between Mount Vernon and Burlington

Check WSDOT for updates and detours as the I-5 bridge collapse is under investigation. The bridge is to remain closed indefinitely.

As reported yesterday, May 23, a portion of a bridge on Interstate 5 collapsed into the Skagit River near Mount Vernon. The Washington State Patrol has confirmed that an oversized load struck the trusses that supported the bridge causing the collapse. State officials and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating. Once the NTSB completes their investigation and releases the site, The Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will move forward with removing debris and a replacement structure.

I-5 is closed between SR 538 (College Way) in Mount Vernon and George Hopper Road in Burlington and there is no timeline for reopening this stretch of roadway. Traffic is being routed around the closure and you can find the detour route on our website. If you need to travel between Mount Vernon and Burlington you should expect long delays and allow extra time to reach your destination. Drivers heading to or from Bellingham or Canada can use State Route 9 as an alternate route.
