Four Issaquah teens were arrested May 18 on suspicion of throwing stolen fruit at Island cars and residences. After being stopped by police at about 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 2500 block of 76th Avenue S.E., a 17-year-old Issaquah boy told police that he drove through Island neighborhoods while his passengers, Daniel Nicholas Tierney, 18; Mark Dustin Cramer, 18; and a 16-year-old male, all of Issaquah, threw between 15 and 30 oranges — shoplifted from a Bellevue grocery store — from the vehicle. Officers found an empty orange box and several pieces of fruit, including oranges, strawberries and watermelons inside the vehicle, from which officers noted a strong odor of oranges and alcohol. One of the 18-year-old passengers admitted to drinking three beers during the course of the incident. A resident in the 7100 block of West Mercer Way reported a garage window was broken and several oranges were found in and around the garage. Additional damage was reported by residents in the 3200 block of West Mercer Way. And, a mailbox along the teens’ route had been knocked off its stand and thrown against the side of a black Volkswagen parked nearby. One of the young men admitted destroying the mailbox and damaging the car. The youths were arrested and processed at Mercer Island Police department before being released.

Mail Theft

Someone stole a Visa bill and enclosed payment check from a resident’s mailbox in the 3000 block of 60th Avenue S.E. The resident had placed the payment envelope in the box at 4 p.m. on May 14.

A credit card statement and other pieces of mail were reported stolen May 13 from a mailbox in the 4400 block of West Mercer Way. The victim has since closed his credit card account after finding a fraudulent $750 charge on his Visa bill.

Property damage

At about noon May 15, a resident in the 5300 block of 84th Place S.E. told police that someone had thrown a baseball-size rock through the window of a 2002 Mercury sport utility vehicle parked in the driveway of the residence.

At 9:30 a.m. May 15, a resident in the 4800 block of Forest Avenue S.E. reported that someone had shattered the window of a 2004 Honda Pilot SUV parked in front of the residence.

Witnesses were unable to provide information on a suspect vehicle seen at the scene of a separate car window smashing about 2:30 a.m. May 15 in the 7200 block of S.E. 72nd Street. In that incident, witnesses inside a house heard a loud crash and came outside to investigate. That’s when they saw a suspect stop a vehicle beside a 1993 Infinity G20, which had a broken window and a large rock on the hood of the car. The suspect got out of the passenger side of his car, picked up the rock off the damaged car and threw the rock into nearby bushes, before getting back in his car, which drove north on 72nd Avenue S.E. and turned east onto S.E. 24th Street.

Sometime between May 9 and May 12, someone used a baseball-size rock to break the rear window of a 1992 Ford Ranger truck parked at a residence in the 1600 block of Roanoke Way. Damage was estimated at $250.

Found items

A girls bicycle was found May 15 on the path leading into Pioneer Park, in the 6300 block of Island Crest Way. The bicycle was placed in found evidence at the police department.

A resident in the 4300 block of Fernbrook Lane found someone else’s mail in his mailbox on May 13. Included was an opened wedding announcement and several pieces of junk mail. The mail was returned to the addressee.

Car prowls

At about 8 a.m. May 13, someone used an instrument similar to a screwdriver to break the window of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee parked in the south parking lot of Luther Burbank Park. A purse and jacket were stolen from the vehicle. The suspect also went through the console and glove compartment of the vehicle.

At 7:15 a.m. May 13, someone used a screwdriver-type instrument to shatter the car window and damage the door frame of a vehicle parked in the 3800 block of East Mercer Way, in the Jewish Community Center parking lot. The victim’s purse, which had been left on the front seat of the vehicle, was stolen and the glove compartment and console had been rifled. Damage was estimated at $500.

DUI traffic accident

The driver of a 2001 Mitsubishi SUV was arrested at about 11:10 p.m. May 14 after she was involved in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of S.E. 68th Street and 84th Avenue S.E. A resident of Duvall, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after she crashed into a Honda driven by an Island resident. The Duvall woman was disoriented and told police she couldn’t remember the collision. She was driving home from an Island house party, at which she admitted to drinking alcohol, prior to the collision. The victim had stopped at the stop sign before proceeding through the intersection and being struck by the other vehicle.

An 18-year-old Island man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol at 11:25 p.m. May 13 in the 7800 block of S.E. 32nd Street. The suspect was stopped by police for driving a 1994 Volvo station wagon erratically and going 55 in a 25-mile-per-hour speed zone. A search of the vehicle produced a half-full can of beer. The suspect refused to do field sobriety tests and told officers he was going to commit suicide because of the arrest. He was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for a 72-hour mental health evaluation.

Financial fraud

An Island resident told police May 13 he was overdrawn at his bank after selling a car on the Internet. A suspect sent the victim a $7,000 check to purchase a $3,800 car. The suspect told the victim he was in London and could only purchase the car if the victim could cash the check and wire him the extra $3205 through Western Union. The victim complied and was later notified by his bank that the check had been a counterfeit. The victim does not have an address or phone number for the suspect. The case was forwarded to prosecutors.
