Each year, MIHS faculty, community members and students select a number of graduates for their leadership, academic excellence, personal strength, inspiration and dedication to their school and community. The following is a list of this year’s recipients, presented during the class of 2007’s Senior Assembly on June 13.

Ethel C. Johnson Award — Presented to a senior selected by the faculty, who exhibits outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service: Daniel Naylor

Robert S. Studebaker Award — Presented to a senior who has excelled in scholarship and leadership and foremost in service to school and community as exemplified by Mr. Studebaker: Jeffrey Benca

Norrie Lamson Inspirational Award — A committee comprised of the class presidents and ASB officers selects an MIHS senior for outstanding contributions in the areas of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, athletic ability, courage, and service: Sara Ramsay

Tyler Cox Memorial Award —Voted on by all MIHS seniors, in honor of a student who best exemplifies the “Tyler Cox” model of good citizenship, school spirit, dedication to community, inspiration to fellow students and respect for family, school and nation: Derek Poppe

Gwen Lewis Memorial Scholarship — Acknowledges a student who gives unselfish attention to the needs of others, showing compassion for all people, cultures, religions, and lifestyles: Shanna Dulin

Krishna D. Vara Scholarship — Awarded to a student who exemplifies the values of perseverance, equality and strength, and is a true friend and inspiration to all. Vara graduated as a Valedictorian in 1998, and passed away shortly after to cancer: Marina Kuhns

Brett Storie Memorial Scholarship — Awarded to a student athlete who embodies Storie’s inspirational spirit, dedication to sport and academic excellence. Storie graduated with honors from Mercer Island High School as a National Merit Scholar in 1999. He attended the University of California at San Diego, where he battled Acute Mylogenic Leukemia for two years: Suzy Myre

In addition to those distinguished at the Senior Assembly, recipients of the following two scholarships (among others *) were announced during the Senior Awards Breakfast Celebration on June 14:

National Merit Scholarship:

Awarded to students who placed within the nation’s top 5 percent on the SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Jacob Bobman, Katherine Defliese, Anders Forsgaard, Michael Holtzman, Alexandre Puttick, Elliott Spelman and Brittney Wong.

Jacob Bobman received the Washington State Scholar Award, a four-year scholarship for academic achievement, outstanding leadership and community service. Only two high school students from each of the state’s 49 legislative districts are awarded this honor.

* Approximately 50 percent of this year’s 360 graduates were distinguished for earning the Washington State Honors Award, which means they placed within the top 10 percent of Washington’s graduating seniors.
