Greenway volunteers to build new trail in Island Crest Park

Mountains to Sound Greenway volunteers will help build a new trail in Island Crest Park this weekend for National Trails Day.

Mountains to Sound Greenway volunteers will help build a new trail in Island Crest Park this weekend, on National Trails Day.

Volunteers will work in partnership with the City of Mercer Island on Saturday, June 4. For many years volunteers have been improving Mercer Island parks, planting native trees and shrubs and removing invasive plants to restore wildlife habitat. Mercer Island has 35 parks, over 400 acres of natural areas and more than 50 miles of trails.

In addition to ongoing environmental restoration work, Greenway volunteers will focus on increasing access to the natural areas on the Island through the construction of this new trail, clear brush, create a sustainable tread and install a gravel surface.

“I want to thank the volunteers who will be working on National Trails Day,” said Peter Goldmark, Commissioner of Public Lands and Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust Board Member. “During tough budget times, their time and effort are even more important to help keep trails and recreation areas open and accessible to the public.”

Full and half day shifts are available for volunteers. To volunteer, visit www.mtsgreenway.org/volunteer, call (206) 812-0122 or write to volunteer@mtsgreenway.org.
