A 19-year-old Mercer Island man was sentenced Friday, July 17 to 30 days in King County Jail and will serve two years of probation after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor in the fourth degree.

The man pleaded guilty in superior court in early July to furnishing alcohol to a minor and having sex with the then 13-year-old victim in September of 2014.

According to King County Court documents, Mercer Island Police were initially notified of the assault Sept. 18 by a Harborview Medical Center social worker. The man, then 18, and the victim were both students at Mercer Island High School.

The man wasn’t arrested until Jan. 5 of this year. Mercer Island Detective Sergeant Jeff Magnan said an investigation that included lab results needed to be completed before an arrest could be made.
