Senior tailback Bryce Steckler scored all four of Redmond High’s touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to a 28-20 season-opening victory over Mercer Island High School on Friday night.
Steckler rumbled into the end zone from 20 yards and 4 yards out in the first quarter, and from 14 yards and 1 yard out in the second quarter, and staked Redmond to a 28-7 lead at halftime.
Also in the first, Islander Alex Bell scored on a 54-yard pass from quarterback Alfonso Gonzalez. In the second half, Mercer Island scored on a pair of end zone runs; a 3-yard (Gonzalez) and 5-yard (Kalen Hopkins), one each in the third and fourth quarters, but Redmond held on for the home nonleague win.
Redmond had 223 total yards rushing.
