The Mercer Island wrestling team beat KingCo rivals Mount Si 36-30 Thursday, Jan. 23 at Mount Si High School, improving to 6-0 in the KingCo standings. Taylan Yuasa earned his 21st win of the season, while Jake Pruchno and Evan Condon each earned their 20th wins.

Both teams entered Thursday’s meet undefeated in KingCo league duals. The Islanders took the early lead with a forfeit in the 106 match and Yuasa’s pin at 120, but Mount Si came back with wins in rounds 126, 145, 152, 160 and 170 to take a 24-19 lead. In the 182 match, senior Tanner Ranz won with a second round pin and put the Islanders up for good.

Mercer Island’s Kevin Pedersen (106) won by forfeit and Yuasa (120) pinned Makhonsadile Lancelot. Mount Si’s Eli Clure (126) won by a 12-10 decision over Luke Wilson, while Pruchno (132) won by major decision over Gunnar Harrison, and Scott Lee (138) edged Mason Marenco in an 11-10 decision. Mount Si took the next three rounds with Ryley Absher (145) pinning Kenji Walker, Justin Edens (152) winning by an 8-1 decision over Dominic Giampapa and Tye Rodne (170) pinning Teague Frazier. Mercer Island won the next two matches as Ranz (182) pinned Quin Oster and Evan Condon (195) pinned Cameron McLain. Mount Si’s Andrew Harris (220) pinned Dylan Majewski, and Evan King (285) won by forfeit.

Next for Mercer Island will be the Jaguar Invitational at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at Emerald Ridge High School.
