The proposed toll on I-90 is asking for a double payment on bridges already paid for. The people dependent on these bridges have already paid in many ways. Their transportation was disrupted for many years with construction, broken windshields, outright taxes and the splitting of our Island in half.

We were given specific promises that we would have easy on/off access in return for granting this for the benefit of all other persons living in the Puget Sound area. The negative impact on Mercer Island is not even measurable. No business would want to locate here. Many here now would be leaving. We already have many vacancies. Workers needed for these businesses would be hard to find, due to travel cost. Mercer Island has a large elderly population. Many trips are required on and off the Island, for doctors, etc. It is a direct slap at the seniors here. The bridges are our only way on and off our Island. It is another tax that we did not authorize.

And the most important reason is that we would not have agreed to all the time, money and imposition required without the word of our elected representatives that we would have easy access on and off our Island forever. That word and promise should be honored without any petitions, letters or meetings. I find it another kick in the ass that we have to resort to these measures to ensure that those promises are kept.
