Letter | Keep kids safe from harmful products

Nothing is more precious than children’s health. To help protect kids from harmful chemicals, I urge Senator Litzow to support the Children’s Safe Products Bill of 2011 (SB 5231). The bill is commonsense legislation that will start getting cancer-causing and other harmful chemicals out of children’s products.

Studies link exposure to toxic chemicals to cancer, learning disabilities and infertility. Unfortunately, these health impacts are on the rise, even in kids. Rates of pediatric cancer continue to rise, and one in six American children have a learning or developmental disability like autism or ADHD.
While there are many reasons for these illnesses, chemical exposure is one contributing factor we can do something about. Plus, reducing diseases means saving billions of dollars in health care costs — not to mention the emotional toll such illnesses take on children and their families.
Ensuring the items children use every day are free of cancer-causing agents and hormone-mimicking chemicals just makes sense. The state legislature needs to make the passage of the Children’s Safe Product Bill a priority.
