Letter | MIHS tennis team is hoping for help for trip

To say that competitive tennis is a part of my life would be an understatement; it is my life.

To say that competitive tennis is a part of my life would be an understatement; it is my life. It is so easy for a competitive athlete to overlook the importance of high school competition, but for me, it is one of the most important aspects of my tennis career.

I’ve enjoyed the camaraderie of a team. I’ve made everlasting friendships. As a co-captain, I’ve learned to lead. I’ve learned to compromise. I’ve learned to fight back tears of disappointment, and I’ve learned to let tears of joy flow. I’ve learned to support others. The list of things I’ve learned can go on and on, and listing it all would be redundant. Simply put, I’ve matured.

Playing for a high school sports team is amazing, but having such a supportive community that recognizes the value of sports is truly a blessing. It is no accident that our high school has the most successful programs in the state. The opportunities for Mercer Island athletes are unlimited because the Mercer Island community is there every step of the way.

The varsity girls’ tennis team will be traveling out of state for the first time, and I am asking for your support.

From March 7-10, we will be competing against the best high school teams in California.

For many girls on the team, it will be the first time traveling out of the state to compete. Hopefully, this trip can be the first of an annual tradition for the girls’ tennis team, but we need your support to realize this dream. I sincerely believe that opportunities like this can have a profound impact on youth, not only as athletes, but also as maturing young adults.

I only hope that my current and future teammates will be able to share the joy and personal growth that I have associated with high school tennis.

Donations to support the girls’ tennis team trip to California can be made as checks to MIHS Parent Support Group and mailed/dropped off at 7002 North Mercer Way, Mercer Island, Wash., 98040. Thank you.
