A 51-year-old Everett man created a fraudulent check with the city of Mercer Island’s bank account number and passed it at an O’Reilly’s Auto Parts location on April 29. The man was not authorized to generate the check.

The Mercer Island Police Department reported 14 arrests and 969 calls for service in April, including 24 thefts, seven burglaries, four assaults and one auto theft. There were 11 traffic accidents, three accident injuries, one hit-and-run, one DUI arrest and 234 total citations, with 44 parking citations.
April 29
Lost bracelet: A 57-year-old woman’s tennis bracelet, inset with sapphires and diamonds, disappeared after the woman helped push a car out of an intersection at 3 p.m. in the 2700 block of 77th Avenue S.E. It wasn’t until later that she saw her bracelet was missing from her wrist.
April 30
Fender-bender: A vehicle rear-ended a Toyota sedan at 1:30 p.m. in the intersection of S.E. 40th Street and S.E. Gallagher Hill Road. The sedan was making a turn, and stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. Both drivers reported stiff necks, but declined medical aid.
Missing woman: A Mercer Island man reported at 3:24 p.m. that his wife, 47, went missing after 11:30 a.m. A phone ping was unsuccessful.
May 2
Dog bite: Police responded to an animal complaint at the Shorewood Apartments in the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive. A 27-year-old man was bitten by a dog at 4 p.m. on May 1 and received treatment for the wound, on his thigh.
Plant Theft: Someone dug up various plants at an uninhabited house in the 7200 block of North Mercer Way. Stolen plants included a small Japanese maple, large camellias, a shrub and ground cover. The theft happened between April 22 and April 28, and was reported on May 2.
DUI: Police arrested a 51-year-old Island man at 9:10 p.m. in the 7400 block of West Mercer Way after witnesses reported that the driver was passing out while parked in the roadway. Police contacted the driver, who smelled of intoxicants, as he was arriving home.
May 3
Accidents: A Lexus made a left turn in front of an oncoming vehicle and caused a collision at 7:50 a.m. in the intersection of S.E. 47th Street and Island Crest Way. The 64-year-old driver of the Lexus was cited for failing to yield the right of way. A passenger in the victim’s vehicle was pregnant and received medical aid for pain.
A Volvo sedan spun out on a curve at 12:50 p.m. in the 4300 block of East Mercer Way and struck a bank of mailboxes, breaking two mailbox posts. The vehicle was damaged, but no injuries were reported. The driver, 34, said he was going 28 mph. He was cited for driving without insurance.
May 4
Arrest: Police arrested a 17-year-old Mercer Island male on a $3,000 Shoreline misdemeanor warrant after 2 p.m. in the 3300 block of 74th Avenue S.E.
Car prowl: An unlocked GMC Yukon XL was stolen sometime between April 26 and May 2 from an apartment building parking lot in the 9000 block of East Shorewood Drive. The 38-year-old owner of the vehicle had left the keys inside, with the doors unlocked.
Assault: A 15-year-old boy punched another boy, also 15, in the face multiple times at 3:05 p.m. at Mercer Island High School in the 9100 block of S.E. 42nd Street. The victim’s mother took him to a hospital for medical treatment. Three witnesses were present.
Malicious mischief: A woman saw a man use a hard object to strike a Ford truck at 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E. The estimated damage was $500. The suspect, 56, is known.
May 5
Arrest: A passerby reported a suspicious subject at 1 p.m. in the 8900 block of S.E. 45th Street. Police found that the subject, a 50-year-old man, was wanted on a Seattle warrant. He was arrested and placed into Seattle police custody.
May 6
Missing bags: A sports bag and messenger bag in the back of a 30-year-old man’s truck were missing when the man arrived home. The bags contained clothes, a Dell laptop, wallet and checkbook. The owner did not know if the bags fell out or were stolen, in the 4200 block of East Mercer Way, between 9:45 and 10:30 p.m.
May 7
Theft: Someone stole an 18-year-old student’s iPhone 4S, worth $300, out of his backpack between 12 and 1:20 p.m., while the victim was in the lunchroom at Mercer Island High School. The student used an app to track his phone, but came within only a two-mile radius before the signal went away, as the phone was likely off.
Arrests: Police arrested a 27-year-old man at 12:21 p.m. in the 7700 block of S.E. 34th Street after performing a vehicle license check. The driver had a $1,000 misdemeanor traffic warrant on record. He was booked into the King County Jail.
A 32-year-old woman was arrested at 4:54 p.m. in the 2800 block of 75th Place S.E. after a license check revealed she was driving with a suspended license and had five counts of failure to appear in court on record.
May 8
Arrest: Police contacted two subjects in a park at 1:09 a.m., after hours, in the 2300 block of 60th Avenue S.E. One of the subjects was a transient 15-year-old girl who had a juvenile felony warrant and juvenile misdemeanor warrant. She was booked into the King County Juvenile Detention Center in Seattle.
May 9
DUI: Police stopped a Mercedes-Benz for equipment and traffic violations at 12:49 a.m. in the 6400 block of Island Crest Way. The driver, 35, had been drinking and failed standard sobriety tests. He was arrested at 1:04 a.m. and was later released to his father. The vehicle was impounded, and police issued a citation for failure to transfer the vehicle title within 45 days of sale.
