The popularity of bands at Mercer Island High School is immediately apparent on a visit to the band room any time during a regular school day. It is always chock full. It is not the place for the claustrophobic. Presently, nearly one-third of all high school students participate in band. But plans are now underway to expand the space, using funds from a levy passed by Islanders in 2008.

It is none too soon.

The Mercer Island School District is requesting “statement of qualifications” from interested architects for the design and construction administration of an 1,880-square-foot addition and upgrade to the band room at Mercer Island High School. The addition will extend directly eastward into some open space and sidewalks. The size of the addition is the maximum square footage currently allowed for expansion on the high school property, given the [zoning] impervious surface requirements, the announcement said. The new space will include a rehearsal room, additional instrument storage, a recording studio, two practice rooms and an office. Acoustical improvements for the entire music room  are also included in the plans.
