A shoplifting incident took place at the Shell station on 78th Avenue S.E. just before 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 7. A juvenile Mercer Island male was taken into custody for stealing a 24-ounce Joose alcoholic beverage, and was released to his parents. The King County Juvenile Court will handle the case with possible charges of third-degree theft and minor in possession.

Theft

A shoplifting incident took place at the Shell station on 78th Avenue S.E. just before 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 7. A juvenile Mercer Island male was taken into custody for stealing a 24-ounce Joose alcoholic beverage, and was released to his parents. The King County Juvenile Court will handle the case with possible charges of third-degree theft and minor in possession.

A 48-year-old Mercer Island man reported losing his wallet at the boat launch in the 3800 block of East Mercer Way on Aug. 6. He cancelled his bank account after being informed by his bank of a failed attempt to access his VISA card.

Two cell phones were stolen out of a purse at a house in the 3200 block of West Mercer Way on Aug. 3. The purse had been left in a closet at a house party during Seafair. The total loss is $600.

A 44-year-old Kirkland man stole his girlfriend’s vehicle alarm remote in the 8000 block of North Mercer Way on Aug. 2. He later returned the object.

A 36-year-old Mercer Island man was the victim of identity theft between July 27 and Aug. 1. Five checks totaling approximately $700 were cashed under his name. He closed his account and opened a new one.

Accidents

Two bicyclists collided on a city bike path in the 7600 block of S.E. 22nd Street on Aug. 9. One cyclist was treated for injuries and taken to a local hospital.

A bicycle collision occurred in the 7600 block of the I-90 bike path on Aug. 5 when a Bellevue man riding eastbound crossed the center line and hit another cyclist head-on. Witnesses said that the cyclist had been riding too fast, according to the police report. Both cyclists sustained abrasions and bruising, and were taken to Overlake Hospital.

A one-car accident occurred in the 5300 block of East Mercer Way on Aug. 2 when a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 19-year-old Renton male drove into a ditch, leaving 68 feet of tire marks along the dirt shoulder. The driver “did not notice the roadway curved to the left,” according to the police report.

An 80-year-old Mercer Island man fell asleep at the wheel while driving eastbound in the 9400 block of S.E. 70th Place on Aug. 4. He failed to drive around a bend in the road and crashed into a mailbox, tree, boulder, bush and light fixture on private property.

An accident occurred in the intersection of Island Crest Way and S.E. 32nd Street on July 30 when a vehicle changed lanes and collided with another vehicle, causing damage to both side doors and the rear panel.

A 50-year-old Mercer Island man was in a bicycle accident in the intersection of East Mercer Way and S.E. 72nd Street on July 28. The cyclist braked while riding downhill to avoid rear-ending a vehicle waiting to turn left onto 72nd Street. He was thrown off his bike when the front brake locked, and he may have broken his collar bone, according to the police report.

An Edmonds woman was in a bicycle accident in the 4100 block of West Mercer Way on July 3. After swerving at an estimated 10 to 15 mph to avoid broken glass in the road, the cyclist fell and sustained skin lacerations, abrasions and an abdominal injury. Aid units treated her at the scene and took her to Overlake Hospital.

Burglary

Police responded to an alarm at a house in the 4400 block of West Mercer Way at 12:45 p.m. on July 28. A burglar had gained entrance to the residence through an upstairs window, but left the scene without taking anything.

Car prowl

A 21-year-old Mercer Island woman reported that her car was prowled in the 6100 block of East Mercer Way between 11:45 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Aug. 2. An unknown suspect broke into the car through a passenger side door window. The front passenger door handle was damaged after the suspect failed to pry it open, according to the police report. The woman’s purse was stolen from the back seat, along with other items.

Arrests

Police contacted a 41-year-old Tacoma man in the 2800 block of 78th Avenue S.E. on Aug. 3 after his ex-wife, who had a protection order against him, called police when she spotted him in a restaurant. The man resisted arrest and obstructed an officer. Restaurant patrons assisted police, who used a Taser on the man and booked him into the King County Jail.

A 24-year-old Lakewood man was arrested in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way on Aug. 9 for driving with a suspended license. He had been speeding more than 10 mph above the speed limit. He was processed, cited and released from the MIPD.

Police arrested a 20-year-old Mercer Island male in the 3400 block of 78th Avenue S.E. on Aug. 9 for a minor liquor violation. Police contacted the young man after witnesses reported that he had assaulted a 10-year-old boy in the Mercerdale Skate Park. He confessed that he had been drinking alcohol, and was processed, cited and released.

A 21-year-old Mercer Island man with a Minor in Possession misdemeanor warrant was arrested in the 4500 block of westbound I-90 on Aug. 7. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Police arrested a 21-year-old Mercer Island man in the 3500 block of East Mercer Way on Aug. 7 for a DUI offense. He was pulled over after exiting from I-90 “at a high rate of speed,” according to the police report. The vehicle failed to complete a left turn and drove onto the shoulder of the road. The driver failed the SFST and .PBT tests, showing a blood alcohol content of .208 and .214. His vehicle was impounded, and he was released to his brother.

A 24-year-old Shoreline man was arrested in the 7400 block of North Mercer Way on Aug. 5 for driving with a suspended license and failing to register his vehicle. Police had stopped the man because his vehicle tabs had expired in April 2008. He was booked into the Issaquah Jail, and his vehicle was impounded.

Two Mercer Island teenagers were arrested in the 2800 block of 75th Avenue S.E., next to the Island Vista Apartments, on Aug. 3 for the possession of marijuana. They were processed at the MIPD and released.

A 45-year-old Bothell man was arrested in the 3000 block of Oakes Avenue on Aug. 3 with an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for reckless driving and other charges at $7,500. The Snohomish County Jail released him into MIPD custody, and he was booked into the Issaquah Jail.

Disturbance

A disturbance occurred in the North end QFC on Aug. 3 when a 22-year-old Mercer Island man “became belligerent” when he was not allowed to purchase beer, according to the police report.

Assault

Two sisters fought and punched each other after the Blue Angels show in the 2200 block of 72nd Avenue S.E. on Aug. 2. They were in a car with family. The car drove away after one sister was made to leave the vehicle, according to the police report. No injuries were sustained.
