An 18-year-old female crashed her car into a chain-link fence on 42nd Street S.E. on Feb. 26. According to the police report, she and a friend were driving northbound on 88th Avenue S.E. when they hit an icy patch on the road, and the driver was unable to stop at the stop sign. The vehicle skid across the road, over a planting strip, hit a bollard and came to rest against a chain-link fence. The car sustained damage to its front bumper, right front quarter panel and front suspension. The driver said that she had been driving too fast for the conditions. No injuries were reported.

Car accidents

A three-car accident occurred on Island Crest Way on Feb. 23 when two vehicles stopped to allow a pedestrian to enter the crosswalk near S.E. 46th Street. According to the incident report, a pile-up occurred after another vehicle was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision. The third car had extensive front-end damage, and the second car was also damaged. No injuries were reported, but the driver of the final car was examined by an aid unit at the scene.

Arrests

A 33-year-old Island man was arrested for trespassing on Feb. 25 after he entered a construction vehicle in the 9700 block of S.E. 35th Place. According to the incident report, the suspect fled the scene and was found and arrested approximately three hours later, confused and cold.

A Redmond man with a warrant to his name was arrested outside the North-end QFC on Feb. 27. According to the report, the suspect was approached after he left his parked vehicle running in the QFC parking lot. A computer check showed a warrant for “Unlawful Bus Conduct” from the King County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Mercer Island Police Department.

A male suspect in a Tacoma child custody kidnapping was arrested in the 4100 block of Island Crest Way on Feb. 24. According to the report, a MIPD officer was assisting the Tacoma Police Department when the arrest was made. A Tacoma officer picked up the suspect at the Mercer Island Police Department. The child in question was transported to the Mercer Island Police Department and picked up by the mother.

An Island man was arrested for DUI after being pulled over for a traffic infraction at 1:47 a.m. in the 7600 block of North Mercer Way on Feb. 23. According to the incident report, the driver failed his sobriety test and had blood alcohol levels of .13. An open container of Miller beer was found at the driver’s feet. The man was processed and released to a sober friend.

A Seattle man was arrested at the Walgreens store on Jan. 23 for picking up a forged prescription. According to the incident report, the man admitted to picking up the prescription for a friend who was going to pay him back with a couple of the pills. The suspect was processed at the Mercer Island Police Department and booked into the King County Jail.

A 16-year-old boy was caught stealing a 16-ounce “Joose” beer from a store in the 2900 block of 76th Avenue S.E. on Feb. 23. The suspect was also found to be in possession of a bag containing two additional beers, which apparently were not stolen from the store.

A 28-year-old was arrested for possession of marijuana on March 1 after being pulled over for failing to stop at a stop sign at 76th Avenue S.E. and North Mercer Way. According to the incident report, the interior of the car smelled of marijuana. Officers found a glass pipe and glass jar with less than 40 grams of marijuana in the car. The driver was arrested, processed and released.

Mischief

A couple living in the 3400 block of 97th Avenue S.E. reported that an unknown suspect entered their house on Feb. 25. According to the report, the suspect most likely entered through an unsecured rear door, then left a lighter and cell phone behind. No items were missing from the house.

A man in the 7900 block of East Mercer Way reported that a window of his house was broken by an unknown suspect sometime between 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 and 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. The object used to break the window was also unknown. The estimated damage is $300.

Two Islanders were written up for illegally occupying two unrented spaces in the 3200 block of Shorewood Drive on March 3. The suspects were charged with burglary in the second degree and malicious mischief in the third degree. Estimated damages are $100.

Theft

A Bank of America employee reported that a woman attempted to deposit a forged check on Feb. 23. The employee called the Bank of America Fraud Department about the check, and the department confirmed that it had been forged. The suspect was arrested and booked into the King County Jail.
