Mercer Island Rotary announces May students of the month

Mercer Island High School seniors Bryan Zhao and Sophie Zink were named the Mercer Island Rotary Club’s students of the month for May.

At school, Zhao is part of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Chamber Orchestra, Senior Service Club and choir and orchestra. He was previously the oresident of the French Honor Society. Zhao has a GPA of 3.97 and has been honored with AP Scholar with Honor and a National Merit Scholar Competition Finalist.

Zhao has studied piano for 12 years and has performed at the Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Hall and on King FM Classical Radio. He has represented Seattle four times at the Washington State Music Teacher’s Association annual conference and has been chosen to perform a concert solo with the Philharmonia Northwest Orchestra.

Zhao attends the Bellevue Fine Arts Studio and was previously a volunteer instructor there.

Zhao is a private tutor for math, English and piano, as well as a piano accompanist for recitals, auditions and competitions.

Currently, Zink is the president of the National Art Honors Society and a member of the French Honors Society. She is involved with Safe Club, Art Club, Voice, Pegasus Literary Magazine, International Club, Badminton Club, Link Crew and Mercer Island Healthy Youth Initiative Action Team.

Zink actively participates in sports, including Mercer Island FC Recreational Soccer and Mercer Island Varsity Badminton, both of which she is captain of, as well as Mercer Island FC Select Soccer.

Zink’s volunteering experience includes being the coach of MIFC Girls U11 Soccer Team, Kids Corps Tutor, French Tutor, Key Club and Natural Helpers. In the past, she has also volunteered with Special Olympics and Angels for a Day.
