The Mercer Island School District (MISD) was named by the College Board to its fifth annual AP District Honor Roll. According to College Board, the AP District Honor Roll includes 547 districts in the United States and Canada that “simultaneously achieved increases in access to Advanced Placement courses for a broader number of students and also maintained or improved the rate at which their AP students earned scores of three or higher on an AP Exam.”
Reaching these goals indicates that the MISD has successfully identified motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work.
“In the class of 2014, 94 percent of graduates continued their education. We believe strongly in preparing our students for college and their careers,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano.
Inclusion on the AP District Honor Roll is based on three years of AP data, from 2012 to 2014, and includes:
· increased participation/access to AP by at least four percent in large districts, at least six percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts;
· increased or maintained the percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students; and,
· improved performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2014 scoring a three or higher to those in 2012, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a three or higher.
In Washington state, 14 of the 295 school districts were recognized on the AP District Honor Roll. The full list can be viewed online through the College Board website at http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/ap/5th-annual-ap-district-honor-roll.pdf.
