Island student honored for collecting toys in memory of friend with cancer

Incoming Mercer Island High School freshman Tegan Yuasa, a member of the Seattle Buddhist Church Troop 252 in Seattle, was honored June 11 as a Boy Scout Eagle Court of Honor.

His Eagle Project was a toy drive for Seattle Children’s Hospital in memory of a friend who spent many days battling cancer in the care of the hospital. As a result, Yuasa was able to collect 523 toy donations. Yuasa completed his Eagle Board of Review on Sept. 14, 2016.

Yuasa is the treasurer for the BSA Order of the Arrow T’Kope Kwiskwis Lodge 502, and just finished his term as the troop’s senior patrol leader. He wrestled and golfed for Islander Middle School. Yuasa also is an avid judo competitor with the Budokan Judo Club of Seattle who earned his brown belt on June 23, and won a silver medal in the Cadet 50-Kilogram International Division at the USA Judo Junior Olympics on June 16-18 in Spokane.
