Mercer Island tennis player wins at USTA event

The annual USTA (United States Tennis Association) Sectional Junior Championship Tournament was held this past weekend in Oregon. Over 370 competitors were present for this event, vying for the prestigious championship.

Mercer Island’s Jordan Smith battled his way to the finals of the boys’ 16-and-under division, ultimately beating Southern Oregon’s Matthew Pronesti. Smith’s 6-2, 6-3 win established him as this year’s boys’ 16s Sectional Champion.

Many Mercer Island junior tennis players participated in this event. Nora Tan made it to the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual winner of the girls’ 16s division. Christopher Elliot had some close matches, making it to the boys’ 10s quarter finals. Sasha Cayward made it to the girls’ 12s quarterfinals, where she ran into the number 2 seed, losing 2 and 1. Jeremy Chow made it to the consolation quarters and also had an excellent doubles match versus a strong team that would eventually make it to the finals, losing in a tight 9-8(9) decision. Brian Hou and his partner made it to the quarterfinals of the boys’ 14s doubles. Kelly Hou was the girls’ 10s Consolation winner. Henry Smith played through three main draw rounds to the quarterfinals before being taken out by the nation’s number four ranked player, Henrik Wiersholm, 6-2, 6-4.

Andrew Smith, Max Franklin, Zack Elliot, Ben Elliot, Michael Chin, Erik Snyder, Craig Deininger, Jack Smith and Christian Anderson also participated.
