Mercer Island wins KingCo tournament | Girls prep tennis

The Mercer Island girls tennis team won the KingCo tournament on Wednesday, May 8. The Islanders were also regular season league champions.

The top four in the singles and doubles tournament, advance to the SeaKing tournament, held this week at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle. The top five from the district tournament will advance to the state meet at the end of May.

In the KingCo tournament, which Mercer Island hosted, senior Nora Tan won the single championship, beating Interlake’s Isabelle Long 6-0, 6-0. Tan won all of her matches in the tournament with a 6-0 score.

Melanie Lee and Carissa Ham both competed in the singles tournament, falling in the quarterfinals, eventually playing each other in the consolation bracket. The two played in the fifth/sixth place match, which was called for light.

In the doubles tournament, sister Gabby and Lydia Venditti won the KingCo title, beating a duo from Liberty 6-2, 6-1.

The other Islanders pairs, Ashely Larson and Jamie Mounger finished in fourth place, after playing teammates Caroline Dillon and Caroline Hamilton. Dillon and Hamilton took third after winning the match 6-1, 6-2.

The girls teams will be joined by the boys teams in the SeaKing tournament, which runs May 14-15.

Competing for the Mercer Island boys will be: Henry Smith and Brian Hou in the singles tournament, while Spencer Dillon and Max Tilden, Kyle Baska and Matt Seifert and Ben Elliott and Charlie Williams will compete in the doubles competition.
