Mercer Island wins three at Skyline tournament | Prep wrestling

The Mercer Island wrestling team traveled to Skyline High School on Saturday, Dec. 1 for the annual Clash of the Classes tournament. The team won three of it’s matches, beating Newport, Issaquah and Eastlake, all 4A teams.

Against Issaquah, Mercer Island won 41-36. Taylan Yuasa won the 113 match by forfiet, Luke Wilson won at 126 pounds, beating Louden Ivey 4-3. In the 132 class, Jacob Pruchno beat Luis Ramirez by techinical fall in 5:00 and in 138 Mike Ong beat Richardo Martinez by pin in 5:00. Colby Starren pinned Kenji Walker in 3:00 to win the 145 weight class, while Nicholas Richards was pinned by Jerdon Helgeson in 3:00 in the 152 class. Jack Vassau won the 160 class for the Islanders, beating Parker Hamilton by decision 9-8. Christopher Richards pinned Chance Gunte in 1:00 to win the 170 class, while Nicholas Chandler won the 182 class by forfeit. In the 195 weight class, Evan Condon pinned Ruben Orta in 1:00 and Issaquah’s Ahmed Ahmed pinned Andrew Picton in the 220 class in 1:00.

Against Newport, Mercer Island beat the Knights 64-18.

Yuasa won the 113 class by major decision over Adam Little 11-2, and Wilson pinned Diego Dwyer in 3:30 to win at 126. Pruchno pinned Nick Lounsbury in 49 seconds in the 132 class, followed by Ong pinning Alex Ono in 53 seconds in the 138 group. Walker pinned Jesse Langley in the 145 group in 2:46, while Nick Richards beat Anders Ophus by pin in 1:30. Vassau pinned Zubair Talat in 2:22 in the 160 weight class and at 170 Chris Richards won by forfeit. Chandler pinned Gavin Strong in 1:05 in the 182 group, while Condon won by forfeit. Picton also won the 220 match by forfeit and Austin Curtis, of Newport, pinned Benjamin O’Connell in 1:08 to win the 285 class.

Against Eastlake, the Islanders won 45-21.

Individually, Yuasa won his third match again by forfeit, while Wilson pinned John Monahan in 46 seconds in the 126 class. Pruchno won the 132 class by decision over William Galarpe 8-4. Ong won the 138 class by forfeit and Walker beat Mark Smith by decision 8-4 in the 145 class. Eastlake’s Jacob Kaufman pinned Nick Richards in the 152 class in 55 seconds. Eric Harper won the 170 class for the Wolves, beating Chris Richards in 1:46. Chandler pinned Kevin Mason in 30 seconds to win the 182 weight class, while Condon pinned Jonnie Estrada in the 195 class. At 220, Picton beat Brandon Kaufman by decision 9-6 and O’Connell pinned James Bradley to win the 285 class.

The Islanders will host Mount Si, Everett and Inglemoor in a double dual on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at Mercer Island High School.
