U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Lieutenant Michael M. Dobrinen, grandson of former Island resident Lorraine Chiocchio and son of Joy Chiocchio, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., on May 27 and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
2nd Lt. Dobrinen successfully completed four years of intensive academic, physical and professional training, resulting in a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in history. Following graduation, he has been assigned to train at Quantico, Va., followed by assignment to Pensacola, Fla., for flight school.
Considered one of the top educational institutions in the country, the Naval Academy has graduated more than 77,000 men and women as Naval or Marine Corps officers and former graduates include one president, 22 members of Congress, 73 Medal of Honor recipients, two Nobel Prize winners and 52 astronauts. 2nd Lt. Dobrinen graduated from Seattle Preparatory High School and received his nomination to USNA from Congressman Jay Inslee.
