MIHS grad Israel-bound for summer science program

MIHS senior chosen for summer science program in Israel

Local student and budding scientist Paula Trepman was recently chosen to attend the prestigious summer science program at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. She is one of 18 American students in one of the world’s foremost centers of scientific research and graduate study.

Trepman applied for the 41st annual Dr. Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) to pursue her passion for genetics.

Over the past year, she interned in a drosophila genetics laboratory in the Genome Sciences Department at the University of Washington, and still goes to the lab for a few hours each week to learn new techniques and help with any current projects.

ISSI, a four-week, intensive science exploration, affords students the opportunity to work in small groups with world-renowned scientists and graduate students, conducting actual, ongoing research. Participants select a subject area in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics or computer sciences. Senior Weizmann Institute scientists will give supplemental lectures, and participants are invited to join departmental talks and visit the campus’s state-of-the-art science facilities.
