Mercer Island welcomes three new businesses on the North end: COBS Bread, Shulkin Hutton Inc. P.S. and Mercer Island Family Medicine, and a new massage therapy practice at Mercer Wellness.
COBS Bread
COBS Bread officially opens to the public at 7 a.m. tomorrow, Oct. 18, but its doors will open at 10 a.m. today for a free product give-away. Donations are suggested and will benefit Island Park Elementary. The name ‘COBS’ comes from ‘cob,’ a round loaf of bread in Australia, and ‘cobber,’ a friend.
COBS first opened in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2003. It belongs to Bakers Delight, an Australian company that has over 700 bakeries in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. The bakery, located on 27th Street across from Tabit Square, will offer fresh bread daily, including a wide range of choices such as Cape Seed, German rye, cinnamon buns and Cheesymite Scroll.
Shulkin Hutton Inc., P.S.
Shulkin Hutton Inc., P.S. moved from Seattle to the Island in September. The law firm specializes in business bankruptcy, reorganizations and receiverships. Jerome Shulkin, attorney, senior shareholder and president of the firm, has lived on the Island since 1958. Shulkin and his former partner, Joe Hutton, who died in 1995, started the firm in 1977.
Shulkin, a member of the Oregon State Bar and Washington State Bar, graduated from the University of Minnesota and the University of Washington law school, served as a board member at the American College of Bankruptcy, Fairfax, Va., and American Bankruptcy Institute, Alexandria, Va., and founded the American Board of Certification, of which he was vice president.
In addition to Washington, Shulkin practices in four northwestern states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. He has appeared in many courts throughout the United States, including the U.S. Supreme Court. His associate is attorney Afton Ekemo, from Alaska. MI Family Medicine
Mercer Island Family Medicine opened in August. Dr. Scott Fannin accepts patients of all ages and offers traditional family medical care, osteopathic manipulative therapy and Suboxone therapy. Fannin is from Long Beach, Calif., and his wife, Jennifer, is the daughter of long-time Mercer Island residents and a graduate of Mercer Island High School. Mrs. Fannin’s father, Dr. J. Clyde Curfew, practiced as a dentist on the Island for 30 years.
Fannin graduated from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience in Kansas City, Mo., and completed a residency at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Macomb County, Mich. He is a recipient of the A.T. Still “Andy” Award from the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA), which named him the 2007 Resident of the Year.

Mercer Wellness therapy
Heidi Nader established a massage therapy practice at Mercer Wellness in August. Nader, a massage therapist, specializes in deep tissue massage and treatment work for motor vehicle accident injuries; muscular dystrophy; chronic and acute pain; fibromyalgia; chronic headaches and more.
Nader has a background in chiropractic care and works with doctors at Swedish Hospital and Mercer Primary Care, to name a few. She devotes Thursdays and Fridays to Mercer Wellness, as she owns Meridian Massage & Wellness Center in Puyallup and also practices in Fremont. Nader plans to hire another therapist on Mercer Island soon. Mercer Wellness is located at 7605 S.E. 27th St., suite 103.
