Walk onto the new playground at Luther Burbank Park, and you will bounce a little on the new rubber surface.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the public to attend will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, with speakers, key supporters, Council members and the mayor. Light refreshments will be served.

New play equipment has been installed to replace the aging play structure at the park as part of the 2013-2014 Capital Improvement Program. Children can play on a new zip line, climbing web, improved slides, merry go-round, and Poured-in-Place safety surfacing.

Benches and picnic tables are expected to arrive in early October. There will also be a volunteer planting project from the Mercer Island Lion’s Club.

The project began in May, funded by a public-private partnership with the Mercer Island Preschool Association and private donations.
