Driving across the country from Atlanta, Ga., to become the new rector at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Mercer Island took more than two weeks for Rev. William Hunt Priest and his family. Such a drive would normally take less than a week, but the Priests visited friends and relatives on the way, and places such as Yellowstone National Park and Flathead Lake, Mont.

When John F. Kennedy Jr. died along with his wife and sister-in-law in a tragic plane crash a few years ago, his uncle, Senator Ted Kennedy, said in his eulogy that John had been given every gift that life has to offer — except for the gift of time. Being able to live a long life, especially when it is a good life, is considered by most of us to be a blessing. July is adult abuse prevention month, and I thought it was important to bring up issues regarding the risks of abuse. When I first started providing social services, the term we used was “elder abuse.” But because a vulnerable adult may not always be an elder, the term has changed. And like all forms of abuse, it can happen to anyone.
The Island’s only Teddy Bear Camp celebrates its 25th year this summer with songs, colorful baking and games. The summer day camp for 3, 4- and 5-year-olds, which is held at Sunnybeam Preschool, has been directed by Islander Marla Donaldson since the early 1980s. A veteran in child education, Donaldson founded Teddy Bear Camp on the virtues of play.
