Rotary announces October’s Islanders of the Month

The Mercer Island Rotary Club named MIHS seniors Stephanie Lee and Ben Shanafelt its Islanders of the Month for October.

The Mercer Island Rotary Club named MIHS seniors Stephanie Lee and Ben Shanafelt its Islanders of the Month for October.

Lee is involved with the Interact Club, Green Team, Gay Straight Alliance, Club of Rock and Senior Service Club at MIHS. Outside of MIHS, she participates in activities with EarthCorps, Mountains to Sound Greenway and the Pacific Science Center. She plays violin and volunteers, participating in manatee and sustainability activism. The daughter of James and Mimi Lee, she plans to attend community college for two years before transferring to a university to receive her bachelor’s degree.

Shanafelt is a cross country and track and field athlete and plays trumpet in the MIHS band. He is also involved with Mercer Island Country Club’s Little Dolphins, the Boy Scouts and various activities at Mercer Island Presbyterian Church, including Student Leadership, after-school church camp LOGOS, Youth Care and missionary trips. Shanafelt enjoys photography, kayaking, swimming and the outdoors. The son of Roger and Carolyn Shanafelt, he plans to attend a four-year college after high school and hopes to study marine biology.
