Rotary honors MIHS students Chew and Bluming

Mercer Island High School students Samara Bluming and Sophia Chew have been named the December Rotary Islanders of the Month.

According to a Mercer Island School District press release, “Samara really is the total package of academic prowess with an approachable, empathetic, and warm personality who relates well with all those around her.”

The senior black belt athlete initiated a program to develop confidence and tools for self-protection for female-presenting teenagers. She is also the clarinet section leader for the band.

The release noted about senior Chew: “Sophia is a unique student in that she is able to combine strong academics, creative entrepreneurship, and impressive volunteer hours.”

In addition to running her photography business, Chew dedicates hundreds of hours to working with both veterans and active duty troops via Operation Gratitude and helping elementary and middle school students during after-school programs with the Atlantic Street Center.
