Rotary Islanders of January

Mercer Island High School students Saloni Parikh and Ian Zhang have been named as the Rotary Islanders of January.

Parikh is the secretary of the Mercer Island marching and concert band, in addition to being the flute section leader. She is also the vice president of the Senior Service Club and the International Club, and a BRIDGES leader. As a sophomore and junior, she was the captain of the MIHS JV tennis team. She has volunteered as an Indian summer camp counselor through the Indian Association of Western Washington Youth Board, and she has also volunteered at Muni Ashram, a school in Goraj, India, for disadvantaged children and a shelter for battered women. Hobbies include Bharatanatyam Indian classical dancing, which she has studied for 10 years. The daughter of Sanjiv and Nandita Parikh, she plans to pursue business and dance at a four-year university.

Zhang is the student government senior vice president, captain of the debate team and Mock Trial president. He is also a member of the varsity wrestling team and volunteers at the Neumaier Lab in the Harborview Medical Center and as a summer group leader at Eastgate Baptist Church. The son of Jing Zhang and Catherine Pan, he plans to attend Duke University with an English major and economics minor before applying to law school.

Both Parikh and Zhang are National Honor Society students.
