As a citizen who is interested not only in the mission and performance of our schools but also in the transparency of the governance by our elected leaders, I want to commend them for three recent actions. They now publish detailed announcements of their upcoming meetings in the Mercer Island Reporter. They held their recent “retreat” meeting on Mercer Island, where it was easily accessible to citizens. And, lastly, the minutes of that meeting, two detailed pages, are available. All of these actions foster transparency in the making and execution of public policy for our schools, which account for one-fourth of the annual property tax bill.
