JV girls basketball

The Mercer Island High School girls JV basketball team took first place in the seventh annual Le’ale’a Tournament Silver Division in Lake Stevens, Wash. They won the championship game against Tukwila Reign, 39-29.

Webster finishes college career

Jaime Webster, a 2004 graduate of MIHS, completed her four-year lacrosse career at Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, Colo., with an outstanding year as a defensive starter for the Tigers. Her team compiled an 11-3 record for the 2008 season. During Webster’s four years of play, Colorado College compiled a 43-18 overall record with three NCAA Division III appearances, making it to the Final Four in 2005 and the Elite Eight in 2007.

Webster graduated on May 19 with a degree in psychology and will be coaching the Seattle Rainz High School elite lacrosse team this summer.

Page wins Arthur

Ash Award

Mercer Island High School graduate Tamon Page was one of 20 University of Washington athletes to be honored by Diverse: Issues in High Education magazine as recipients of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. The award was established in 1992 to honor undergraduate students of color who excel both academically and athletically. To be included, students must have completed at least one academic year of course work and must compete in an intercollegiate sport, be enrolled for the fall term of 2007, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses and/or in their communities.

As a senior, Page earned Pac-10 All-Academic first team honors in swimming. He took 15th in the 100 back and 18th in the 200 back (1:51.87) at the Pac-10 Championships. His time of 50.23 in the 100 back was a new career-best and also ranks No. 6 all-time at the UW, while his time of 1:50.35 in the prelims of the 200 back was also a new career-best mark. Page also competed in the 200 IM at the Pac-10’s, swimming a personal best time of 1:54.00 in the prelims, had three third-place finishes in the 100 back in dual meets and swam four events during the season.

MI Tigers run the table at Bellevue-MI City Tournament

The Mercer Island Little League made an outstanding showing in the recent Bellevue-MI City Tournament for Majors baseball teams, led by the MI Tigers, who won five consecutive games to capture the coveted title of City Champs. A total of 24 Majors teams from four Little Leagues participated in the tournament, including eight teams from Mercer Island, eight teams from Bellevue Thunderbird, five teams from Bellevue West and three teams from Bellevue East. The eight MI teams compiled a 25-14 win-loss record over the course of the two-week tournament. Not only did the Mercer Island teams win 25 games, they also finished in three of the top four places in the tournament as the MI Yankees were runners-up and the MI Red Sox placed fourth.

The championship game was an all-Mercer Island affair, matching the MI Tigers against the MI Yankees, champions of the Mercer Island Little League. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. The Yankees responded with four runs to take a 4-3 lead after two innings. A clutch two-out triple by Jacob Stenberg in the top of the third gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the third, after the Yankees loaded the bases with no outs, Brandon Lawler struck out the side to hold the lead. The Tigers tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth and the Yankees responded with one of their own to make the score 8-5 heading into the sixth inning. After going scoreless in the top of the sixth, the Tigers’ pitching and defense held the top of the Yankees’ order in check during the bottom half to preserve the 8-5 victory.

For the tournament, Josh Stenberg led the team in batting with a .700 average and .786 on-base percentage. Jacob Stenberg contributed seven hits and 10 RBIs, including a big three-run home run in a 7-1 victory over the MI Pirates. Christopher Lawler anchored the pitching staff with a pair of complete game victories and only two runs allowed with no walks. Defensively, Peter Lopes made a number of outstanding plays at third base throughout the tournament while Peter Giseburt shone at first base. Sam Eggers caught nearly every inning for the pitching staff that allowed only 10 runs over the course of the five games.

MIHS girls basketball wins again

For the second week in a row, the MIHS girls varsity basketball team took first place. The team traveled to Lake Stevens, Wash., to play in the Le’ale’a tournament.
