The Mercer Island girls basketball sixth-grade select team won its first tournament of the season. The girls played in the 2008 Skyline Girls Select Basketball Tournament on Nov. 7-9 and went undefeated in all five of their games, including the title game against the host team, Skyline. This is the second consecutive year that the team has won this tournament. Team members include: Julia Blumenstein, Brooke Behrbaum, Gretchen Peterson, Molly Bucklin, Katherine Vetter, Megan Diamond, Jamie Mounger, Amanda Tsang, Olivia Snell, Stephanie Silke and Jessica Blakeslee.

Parent meeting for MI baseball travel team

The Mercer Island travel team will hold a parent meeting tomorrow from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Community Center at Mercerview.

The meeting will update program goals, set a new tryout process, coordinate new Sunday game schedules, postseason timeline, important dates and other key information for parents.

Webster named athlete of the week for CU

Mercer Island graduate and volleyball defensive specialist senior, Callie Webster, was named the University of Colorado’s Athlete of the Week for Oct. 27 to Nov. 2. This is the first honor of the year for Webster.

Webster recorded 16 digs in the 3-1 upset victory over No. 2 and previously undefeated Nebraska at the Coors Event and Conference Center in Boulder. She was tied along with teammate Alex Buth, who also recorded 16 digs. Webster also served up a pair of aces. She averaged 4.00 dps.

Colorado is just one of two programs to beat Nebraska in the last eight years, Texas being the other.

Webster had 11 digs in the win two years ago, which went five sets.

Jr. Hoopsters b-ball camp for girls

This year, the Jr. Hoopsters’ camp will be run completely by the high school coaching staff and high school players.

Registrations are now being taken for this popular winter camp for first- through fifth-grade girls. Camps run for eight Saturday mornings from Dec. 6 through Feb. 7, with the exception of winter break. The registration deadline is Dec. 3.
